Visual editing is huge part of photography and can completely change the mood of an image. My editing style changes a lot based on my mood, the composition of the photo, the subject and the purpose of the image. Personally, moody or dark shooting is by far my favorite. This is because the viewer has to "find" the purpose of the image. I love the post production of photography and seeing how different people's styles can completely change an image.
